Moms

If only for a few days, we are in our "Real" home state. We know it is home because this is where our mamas are and nothing says home like spending time with mom.

(When talking about our moms, we call my mother "mom" and Mike's mother "ma" so I will do that here.)

Mom welcomed us with hugs and a home cooked meal of roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green veggies - complete with homemade pie for dessert. That meal welcomed us back to midwest cooking! That was five days ago and since then, I have spent four days with mom. We have talked about her life and mine, world affairs, what's new in town and a book she just read. We have baked cookies, gone to church together, shared lunch a couple of times, and talked some more. I wish there was a way to bottle up these times with mom and have them always!

This is a picture of mom coming out of her favorite bar - Ok, so it is just a local place to have lunch, but it is fun to tease her!

Recently Jeanne (a granddaughter) took mom to an author's talk at the local library. The book was called Crackers and Milk and is the story of the author's mother who spent all of her young life impoverished, many years without parents, and several hard years at the State Orphanage in Owatonna. (Mom loaned the book to us and we both read it in a day.) Mom and I decided to visit the old orphanage today. We went through the museum and looked at the exhibits and once again realized how lucky we are to have the lives we have had; we both had good parents!

This is a picture of mom ouside the old State Orphanage reading about the 10,000 children who called this place home in the 59 years it existed.

I don't have a current picture of ma, but it was sure good to see her. Ma is younger than my mother by a year (only 87), but her life is very different. She has called Grandview her home for many years. She may not make us home cooked meals, but she still shows us love. Ma called us each by name when we came to visit and told us that she tells everyone, "Myron is my son." She also shared with us that her watch wasn't working anymore and after checking the dressing drawer, we realized she was out of treats - this is a woman who loves her sweets (almost as much as we love chocolate).

So, mom and I baked the cookies ma loves and I bought a watch and Mike got some candy and made the delivery - it is good to be able to make someone happy with such little effort.

It is good to have moms!
