The Gathering of Sadies' Ladies 2008

On the first weekend in October, Sadies' Ladies met for their 10th annual cousins gathering. New Ulm, Minnesota was the designated location and their home for the weekend was The Bohemian Bed and Breakfast. I can wholeheartedly recommend this establishment; Bobbi, the owner, is a gracious hostess and a very fine breakfast cook. The home itself is an 1890's home and has been wonderfully cared for with wide dark woodwork and original stained glass windows on the landing. Yes, it was a beautiful location for the cousins 10th anniversary.
Cheryl and Paula arrived with great food - a stop at Schmidt's Meat Market in Nicollet saw to that.
Becky arrived with a bit of brew...
And they gathered on the wonderful wrap-around porch; a great area for a quick snack and cool enough to keep the alcohol chilled!

It was Octoberfest in New Ulm so, of course, our first stop on Friday was Schell's Brewery for the famous tour and sampling
The nondrinker among us, Carin, kept track of how many samples we really were having while she enjoyed the 1919 Rootbeer they make at Schells. The Sadies's Ladies group doesn't just have a picture taken, they recruit the current owner, a relative of old August Schell, to pose with them. Actually he was playing nice with some distributors from Northern MN and he could not resist our group!

The grounds are beautiful - complete with peacocks, even a pure white one. The bronze deer was created in Germany and Mr. Schell brought it here; it is the symbol you see on all the Schell's beers - the deer was a part of the family crest in the old country.
The peacocks walked around freely and seemed to stop and pose once in awhile. This is a caretakers' home on the family part of the grounds. The "big house" has not been occupied since the 1980's.
After the Brewery, Cheri, Becky, Elaine and I headed out for a spiritual journey. This outside Way of the Cross sits on a hill and was created by nuns in the early 1900's. This station "Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus" takes on a different perspective when it encompasses the reflection. That is Becky you see as the "close up" observer.
This chapel sits atop the hill - with only 10 pews it was a restful and peaceful place.
From atop the hill, we spotted this very large Cathedral and decided we would also pay it a visit.
The altar is adorned with the apostles painted on Anton Gag. On Saturday, we visited his home in New Ulm.
The bronze sculpture sits outside the Cathedral. All of us were struck by the way Jesus is depicted touching the face of His Mother, Mary.
On Saturday, we visited Herman the German and all of us, but Pam and Cheri, climbed to the top. I just had to prove it be getting this "crotch shot" of the big boy! Sister, Cathy, Carin and Carol all made it, but it was fun to watch the minor fear when Cathy was going now. She kept saying it had to do with being in the barn at Cheryl's as a child...
We gathered at the bottom to debrief and plan our next stop.

We decided on the Lind House; home to one of Minnesota's first governors. The curator was kind enough to shoot the group. The Lind Home had some beautiful period pieces and this swedish Christmas corner caught my eye.
From there, we went to the Gag home where Anton and Wanda and all the other little Gags lived. Wanda was the author of "Millions of Cats" which I am sure every elementary kid reads at one time or another. All 7 children lived in one room and the attic area was used for an art studio and photography studio. All died yound and many suffered from mental illness. It is guessed today that the lead paint fumes may have had something to do with it. This was the door to one of the rooms... yes, I felt like a giant!
These little drawings adorned the walls like decals; they are all original work of Anton Gag. You know, it was Octoberfest and the polka band was playing in the street. There were a couple of taverns visited over the weekend in addition to all the cultural stuff!
And yes, we did get into the spirit of things.
OMG Cheryl and Jan are at it again!
Everyone declared the weekend a success and went home feeling tired, refreshed somehow and connected! We definitely decided to keep the group going and "The Berg Girls" are already planning 2009.
