It's For The Birds...

Last Sunday, I get a call at 6 am that I was needed at mom's house. It seems that she had "hit the button" after a fall and the paramedics had come as called. After a short exam, mom was able to walk and so she sent them away... BUT, she was still very shook up so (this is where the small town story kicks in) the paramedic calls his mom who happens to be my brother's ex-wife's sister-in-law, Heidi, and she calls my niece in Minneapolis who calls her dad, my brother, in Florida who calls me and when I get to Kenyon less than 45 minutes later, Heidi is putting on her makeup and getting ready for church while mom rests. All seems well.

A few minutes after I got there, I helped mom into the bathroom and she and I both realized that all was not well; she was in excruciating pain whenever she tried to step on her right foot. Fast forward three hours and mom's MRI is complete and her hip is broken...

It wasn't until Monday morning when the surgeon talked to us that we found out it was a fracture in the top part of the hip and that surgery would not be necessary - eventually it will heal on its own. We were told that in a younger person, they would consider surgery to stabilize it further but he definitely did not recommend that for mom. Good news since mom, and all of us, were concerned about her surviving a long surgery.

We were also told that recovery would take at least a couple of months and that mom would require continuous care. Monday afternoon found Rich and I getting a tour of a nursing home in Faribault and by Tuesday at 1 pm, mom was a resident of Pleasant Manor. I could go on and on at this point... but I won't. Suffice it to say that the transition has been tough, but change is tough for lots of people a lot younger than 92. And then there is the pain; Mike says if you haven't experienced continuous pain, you can't imagine it. All I know is that it is hard for me to see and not be able to "Fix" - you know I am a fixer!

So, much of this past week has been "for the birds". When I took time at home to relax this week, I took a few pictures of the birds that hang around our place.

Prayers for mom are appreciated. Till later...
