Great Lakes Country

Our first stop on " The Great Trip East of 2011" was the U P of Michigan. And our first stop was at Sand Pointe Lighthouse because what is a trip to Michigan without stops at many lighthouses. This lighthouse is on Lake Michigan near Escanaba. (Yes, it is my photo, I was just playing around with different effects.)

I could just see the men bringing the lifeboat up to the boathouse in the mid 1870's. (No, it isn't my photo but a painting from years past.)
The Harbor here was nearly deserted. It was a very quiet Friday morning.

We landed Friday night in Sault Ste. Marie at a campground right on St. Mary's River. This is the river through which all ship traffic must pass to get from Lake Huron into Lake Superior and on to the Harbors in Duluth and Superior. Mike and I had seen this campground a few years back when we were here with Rich and Anita and thought it would be a great place to spend a couple of days. And it was!

On Saturday morning, I was up early enough to see the river steaming as the sun made its way into the sky. (No special affects needed on this one - mother nature put on this show all by herself!)

When we finally got moving, we visited the Soo Locks and saw a ship that was loaded with coal in Superior and was heading for Detroit.

Later we visited the Tower of History and found a most interesting display. For those of you who can't read small print anymore, the display sign reads, "Elk Hooves, Used as footwear to decive anyone attempting to track the person wearing them." It was in a display telling about the Ojibwe of the area.

From the top of the 21 story tower you could look down on the Catholic Church next door
and on the harbor and the cities of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario and Michigan.

Of course, we had to make it to Antlers for lunch.
This is the only time I have ever seen a two headed calf... I was assured by both Mike and Barry that it was "real" so who am I to doubt such experts.
If you are ever in Sault Ste. Marie, you have to stop at this place; it is a treat for your eyes and your palate. I had pickled herring on a toasted bagel spread with flavored cream cheese served with a spinach salad and Mike had a white fish sandwich with gouda cheese - Good Stuff!

We had a fire on Saturday night and drank some wine while talking smart. It was a good day.

Early this morning, we headed south to beat the weekend traffic over the Mackinaw Bridge.

We drove down the Lake Huron side of Michigan on State Highway 23 today and managed to stop at a couple more lighthouses. This one is at 40 mile point.

This is the NEW lighthouse at Presque Isle. It was built in 1870 when the Old lighthouse, built in 1840 was determined to not be visible far enough out on Lake Huron. This is the tallest lighthouse on the Great Lakes.

I took far more pictures but the battery on the computer is getting low and it is time to get some sleep. More later.
