More From The Mississippi River

In the last two days, we have cruised "The Ole Miss" from Alma, WI to Afton, MN. That is most of Pool 3 and all of Pool 4. For Mike and I, part of the trip was a journey down memory lane.

When I worked in Mt. Horeb, WI and Mike worked in MN, we met at the river nearly every weekend. Many of those weekends we spent at Jim and Monica's place south of Wabasha, down on the prairie.

The last time Mike water skied was on the Mississippi.

Jim nearly dumped us in the river when we launched his new pontoon on the Mississippi.

Years ago, we spent a memorable day bar hopping on the Mississippi with Bob and Paula and the Keoghs.

The summer or two before my dad passed away, he came to the Mississippi and I can still see him sitting in a lawn chair on the river bank.

The Pickle Factory in Pepin has been a favorite stop along the Mississippi for many many years for all of my family. (I was disappointed in the food this year...)

Monica and I shared a fabulous float one summer evening in the Mississippi River while the boys tried to fix the boat that wasn't broken...

I could go on, but this is probably as boring as watching home movies of summer vacation! Anyway, this year, we discovered Eagles. And are there ever lots of them in the trees along the river in Pool 3. My pictures don't do them justice, but you will get the idea.

They are like no other bird in flight.
This one was going after a fish in the water; it was a graceful attempt that wasn't successful.
We spotted several in trees .
But spotting two on one branch isn't real common.
They do like the tallest tip of the tree; this fellow could not be spooked into flying no matter what noise we made below. (We were trying for flight pictures.)

This one had a great perch overlooking the water and when we stopped for a potty break, we caught sight of him through a hole in the trees.

We are coming to the end of our month at the river and we definitely want to be back next year; we had forgotten how much fun it can be. On Tuesday, we pack it up and head west.
