A Ruin and Lunch

One day this week, Bonnie and I headed into Globe to check out Besh Ba Gowah, an archaeological park complete with ruins from the Salado Indians (circa 1200 - 1400).

I have visited the site several years ago and remembered the amazing collection of pottery from the area - this is just a small sampling.

The re-creation of the dwellings is okay, but we have certainly seen better.

But the cactus on the grounds are great.  This one is commonly called a "cow's tongue".

Bonnie stood next to it to show just how huge this plant grows.

And this little "lollipop" stood proudly next to the rock - it is a baby prickly pear.

This is commonly called the "Micky Mouse" cactus.

And I don't know what this one is called but the flowers were just starting and very pretty.

Did you know that barrel cactus were a natural compass for the Native Americans - it will grow leaning towards true south when on a flat surface.

After we learned a little and enjoyed the beautiful warm day, we found a 100 year old diner in historic downtown Globe and enjoyed lunch.

On Thursday, the Lyons left for home and Larry, Tud, Diane, Mike and I took off for Young to have lunch at The Antler.  It is only a 47 mile drive but with the magnificent scenery and interesting roadway, the roundtrip took us 6 hours.

Our first stop was the old cowboy cabin - what a view that fellow had.

Since we had rain recently, the creeks were flowing - nice to see water and greenery in this area.

We had our picture taken at the Plateau's.  On the rocks behind us, a young man training in rescue fell 200 feet just the day before we were there. They were not able to rescue him until early the morning we visited.  He was alive but badly broken - haven't heard how he is now.

The area is beautiful with Roosevelt Lake and Four Peaks in the background

Diane wasn't so sure she like the height, but ventured out a ways to peek over the side.

A great trip along the side roads,

and our lunch at The Antler in Young was excellent.
